Turnix sylvaticus Common Buttonquail Bosveldkwarteltjie

Kloof Pass, Nov 2018

Hermanusdoorns, Nov 2017

An erratic visitor. Uncommon; widely but sparsely recorded across the Waterberg; less frequent in surrounding thorn savanna (62% in, 38% out; recorded in 12% of the Waterberg pentads); frequents both wooded and open country but avoids rocky terrain; occurs singly, or in pairs when breeding; a shy, secretive bird, its presence is mostly detected by hearing its low-pitched booming call; it is likely that it breeds here but evidence is lacking.
