A breeding resident. Uncommon, but small numbers are permanently present at a number of dams in the Waterberg – preferred dams are characterized by having a substantial cover of Nymphaea lilies and by being fringed by sedges (recorded in 17% of the Waterberg pentads). Occurs in pairs or loosely associated groups of up to 20 birds; the Waterberg population probably numbers about 200 birds.
