A breeding resident. Scarce. Occurs widely but sparsely throughout the Waterberg, mostly found on larger farm dams in agricultural areas (recorded in 31% of the Waterberg pentads). It is present year-round and in winter scattered birds coalesce into large flocks that may number 500-1000 birds. Ringing data from elsewhere in South Africa has shown that at least some individuals migrate in winter to the northern tropics. Breeds in late summer.
