A breeding resident. A mainly thorn savanna species that occurs widely on the Springbok Flats and in other fringing thornveld areas, but it is rare and very sparsely recorded in the Waterberg (recorded in 4% of the Waterberg pentads); occurs singly, or in pairs while breeding; detected mostly at night from its cheerful hooting call. Breeds in summer.
