A resident. Rare, very sparsely recorded on dams across the southern half of the Waterberg where sedge- and reedbeds provide habitat (recorded in 7% of the Waterberg pentads). On the nearby Nyl floodplain large numbers of these birds move in to breed during summers of exceptional rain; it is likely that it also breeds in the Waterberg but evidence is lacking.
