Emerging from nest hole originally excavated by Bearded Woodpecker in powerline pole

A breeding resident. Scarce, and largely restricted to the south-western and north-western edges of the Waterberg, found especially where stands of tall monkey-thorn are present (recorded in 15% of the Waterberg pentads); encountered singly, in pairs, or in small groups; its presence is usually detected by hearing its shrill calls. Breeds in late summer.
