A breeding resident. Uncommon. Single birds or in small groups occur widely but sparsely, year-round, on larger dams, especially in areas under irrigation (recorded in 17% of the Waterberg pentads). Small numbers breed colonially in winter from time to time alongside Black-headed Herons and other colonial breeders at regularly used sites.
