A breeding resident. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg, less so in the surrounding thorn savanna (69% in, 31% out; recorded in 46% of the Waterberg pentads); its occurrence is mostly linked to water (dam and river edges) fringed by bare ground or shortly cropped grass; also forages away from water on lawns and short-grass areas, such as in gardens and around farm homesteads; found singly, in pairs or small groups. Breeds in summer.
