A resident. Scarce and localised in the Waterberg; much commoner in the surrounding thorn savanna, extending marginally into fringing thornveld (43% in, 57% out; recorded in 31% of the Waterberg pentads); any woodland, but favours thornveld; single birds are typically encountered, in pairs while breeding; it is likely that it breeds in the Waterberg but evidence is lacking.
