A breeding resident. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg, less so in the surrounding thorn savanna (62% in, 38% out; recorded in 61% of the Waterberg pentads); frequents lightly wooded country on sandy substrates, either as single birds, in pairs while breeding, or in family groups in winter. Breeds in summer, sometimes parasitised by Greater Honeyguide.
