A breeding resident. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg, much less so in the surrounding thorn savanna (73% in, 27% out; recorded in 66% of the Waterberg pentads); frequents open and lightly wooded country, its occurrence dependent on the presence of a nearby breeding site (an earth embankment or donga) to which the birds return to roost nightly; gregarious, occurring year-round in flocks which roost and breed colonially in tunnels made in earth banks in summer.
