A non-breeding summer visitor from the Palearctic, present between Oct and Mar. The most frequently recorded bee-eater in the Waterberg, it is common and widespread and likely to be found in both open and wooded country (recorded in 89% of the Waterberg pentads); gregarious, it is typically found in flocks of 10-20 birds with larger numbers gathering at night-time roosts and when migrating. The birds are often detected flying high overhead from the sound of their melodious calls.
