A breeding resident. Locally common and widespread across the Waterberg and likely to occur wherever its habitat is to be found; much less frequent in the surrounding thorn savanna (81% in, 19% out; recorded in 45% of the Waterberg pentads); it favours open areas where there is a shortish but dense grass cover, especially on damp ground and along the margins of vleis; a conspicuous bird, it occurs singly or in pairs. Breeds in summer.
