A breeding resident. Common. It is the most frequently encountered barbet in the Waterberg, found in all woodland types; it is much less common in the surrounding thorn savanna (67% in, 33% out, and recorded in 94% of the Waterberg pentads). Pairs are territorial year-round, remaining in family groups through the winter after breeding, and its presence is usually detected from the characteristic duetting (“two-puddly”) call. Breeds in summer and a frequent host of the Lesser Honeyguide.
