It is indeed a new day at Kaingo. The cold nights are a thing of the past. The sun, shining brightly at six AM, has a certain warmth to it. This time of year, we would describe as the ‘Goldilocks time’; not too warm, not too cold, just comfortable.
This winter on Kaingo was cold. We blame it on the good rains we have had the last season. The Waterberg is one of those curious places that hold back its water. The peat-like layers of soil on the higher elevations allow for the water to drain into the rock (sandstone, the building blocks of the Waterberg, is porous) and this allows for a very slow seep of water throughout the winter following good rains.
It also means bitterly cold nights and early mornings…but that is a thing of the past!
Driving through the bush at this time of year is a delight of small flowers, new buds, and a general sense of awakening.
Our corral trees stand proud with their scarlet flowers in sharp contrast to their grey bark. The heart-shaped leaves will follow within a few weeks.
The Wild Pear, dressed in a finery of little white flowers, like a blushing bride on her wedding day, stands in wait for the awakening insects in a landscape of dull yellows, browns and grey.
The animals too seem to have a lighter step now that winters cold have passed. Gone is the ruffled phyllo erecting of the impala. The warthog families can be seen from early morning; in the cold, they tend to wait for a little bit of warmth before they feed and move around. Kaingo’s elephant herds move around more, their tracks were seen on the extremities of the reserve. Even the lion seems to love the suns new warmth!
It is a new day for Kaingo’s elephant lodge as well. We can safely reopen our doors to our guests again!
