A breeding summer visitor, present between late Oct and Mar. Scarce; occurs widely but sparsely across the Waterberg, much less frequently in the surrounding thorn savanna (84% in, 16% out; recorded in 33% of the Waterberg pentads); it frequents open woodland with a shortly cropped grass substrate; is easily overlooked; usually encountered singly, or in pairs at breeding sites; the nest hole is typically dug in the roof of an aardvark hole. Breeds in mid-summer.
