A breeding resident. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg, less so in the surrounding thorn savanna (69% in, 31% out; recorded in 59% of the Waterberg pentads); occurs singly, in pairs or, in winter, in small flocks; frequents open woodland, favouring open areas for aerial hunting. Breeds in early summer, typically building its nest in the roof of an aardvark hole or porcupine burrow.
