A breeding resident. Very common, occurring widely across the Waterberg; somewhat less frequent in the surrounding thorn savanna (62% in, 38% out; recorded in 93% of the Waterberg pentads). It is the commonest kingfisher in the Waterberg, occurring in most wooded habitats, its occurrence dependent on an earth bank being available in which it digs its tunnel nest; this is used year-round, both for breeding and roosting. Breeds in summer.
