Euplectes orix Southern Red Bishop Rooivink

Modimolle, Feb 2016
male

A breeding resident. Restricted by its dependence on reedbeds for breeding and roosting, hence localised in its occurrence; but it is common in places, both in the Waterberg and in the surrounding thorn savanna (52% in, 48% out; recorded in 41% of the Waterberg pentads); likely to occur wherever there are Phragmites reedbeds, but most regularly found in open, agricultural landscapes; gregarious, occurs year-round in small to large flocks. Breeds in summer.
