A breeding resident. Scarce and localised in the Waterberg and essentially absent from the surrounding thorn savanna (92% in, 8% out; recorded in 21% of the Waterberg pentads); frequents areas of rank grass and forbs, especially where growing along narrow drainage lines in hilly country; gregarious, in small flocks year-round. From males displaying it is assumed to breed in the Waterberg, but further evidence is so far lacking.
