A breeding resident. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg, less frequent in the surrounding thorn savanna (60% in, 40% out; recorded in 64% of the Waterberg pentads); a gregarious species except when nesting, it occurs in groups or flocks, sometimes numbering 50 or more birds; its preferred habitat is where there is rank grass growing on damp ground such as along streams or the margins of wetlands, but it may occur anywhere on occasion. Breeds in summer.
