Cuculus clamosus | Black Cuckoo | Swartkoekoek

Bokstoot, Nov 2014

A breeding summer visitor, present between Oct and Mar. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg, less so in the surrounding thorn savanna (59% in, 41% out; recorded in 53% of the Waterberg pentads); frequents any woodland; the male’s presence is often given away by its mournful “I’m so sick” call. Breeds in summer; parasitic, Laniarius bush-shrikes are its preferred hosts in the area.
