A breeding resident. Fairly common and widespread across the Waterberg, much less frequent in the surrounding thorn savanna (74% in, 26% out; recorded in 53% of the Waterberg pentads); may occur in any woodland but favours higher-lying areas, especially where Protea caffra occurs extensively; found singly, in pairs or in small parties.
