A summer visitor, present Dec to Mar. Rare. Very sparsely recorded in the Waterberg; frequents marshy ground, especially seasonal vleis and seasonally inundated grassland. Secretive, so probably largely overlooked and more widely present than records suggest; best detected by listening in suitable habitat for its distinctive call, especially around sunrise; it is likely that it breeds here but evidence is lacking.
