Coturnix delegorguei Harlequin Quail Bontkwartel

Boschdraai, Jan 2019

An erratic summer visitor. Rare; very sparsely recorded in the Waterberg, much commoner in the surrounding thorn savanna (18% in, 82% out; recorded in 2% of the Waterberg pentads); secretive, sometimes seen venturing onto roads but mostly detected from hearing its characteristic hooting call; it is closely similar to the call of the Common Quail and care is needed to distinguish the two.
