A breeding resident. Restricted to the higher-lying open grassy areas of the Waterberg where it is locally common (recorded in 10% of the Waterberg pentads); any records of this species from habitats other than this are probably invalid; in summer the monotonous squeaky aerial song of high-flying displaying males gives away the presence of the bird; it is far less detectable and identifiable in winter when the birds are silent.
