A breeding resident. Localised, but fairly common in the Waterberg, found wherever its preferred habitat of extensive rock outcrop occurs (recorded in 25% of the Waterberg pentads); mostly detected at night from its yelping dog-like “cow-wow” call; it calls year-round but is most vocal in early summer. Breeds in summer. The Waterberg is a stronghold for this species in South Africa.
