A breeding resident. An arid savanna species that is common in the surrounding thorn savannas, ranging marginally into the fringes of the Waterberg and elsewhere where outliers of its favoured thornveld habitat occur (26% in, 74% out; recorded in 20% of the Waterberg pentads); occurs singly or in pairs; a skulking species, more often heard than seen, its song (in summer only) being a high-pitched insect-like trill. Breeds in summer.
