Butorides striata Green-backed Heron Groenrugreier

Dinaka, Jan 2019

Wydehoek, Jul 2018
Modimolle, Jan 2014

A breeding resident. Scarce, but widespread, occurring singly or in pairs along tree-lined rivers and dams (recorded in 38% of the Waterberg pentads); is easily overlooked unless it is flushed when it takes to the wing uttering a diagnostic sharp ‘kyah‘ barking sound. Pairs nest solitarily, building a small platform nest in a tree overhanging water. Breeds in summer.
