Buphagus africanus |  Yellow-billed Oxpecker  | Geelbekrenostervoël

Dabchick Wildlife Reserve, Feb 2019

A vagrant. One record of a single bird (photographed) on a buffalo on a farm near Rankin’s Pass in Dec 2019. This is far west of its current known range in the Kruger National Park and adjacent lowveld but a specimen in a Swedish Museum was collected near Modimolle in Aug 1844 suggesting that it once occurred in the area before the post-rinderpest disappearance of the species from South Africa in the early 1900s.
