A breeding resident. Rare and localised, with scattered pairs occurring in well-wooded kloofs along the Sandriviersberg and elsewhere in the Waterberg (recorded in 3% of the Waterberg pentads); an evergreen forest and forest-edge species elsewhere, the Waterberg population is a distant outlier from its main range; occurs singly or in pairs. No evidence of it breeding in the Waterberg is available, but it almost certainly does.
