A breeding resident. Scarce. Occurs sparsely across the Waterberg, mostly on farm dams, with evidence that there is much local movement between sites (recorded in 22% of the Waterberg pentads). Typically found as single birds, in pairs, or small groups, rarely up to 50 together. Breeds in summer.
