A breeding resident. Scarce. Occurs widely but sparsely across the Waterberg (recorded in 38% of the Waterberg pentads); likely to occur on any larger farm dam that has an adequate cover of Nymphaea water-lilies; typically fewer than five birds present, occasionally up to 20 on a dam, with evidence of much local movement. Breeds in summer.
