A breeding resident. Rarely recorded but probably commoner than the scattered records on the map suggest – its secretive nature results in it being easily overlooked (recorded in 6% of the Waterberg pentads); frequents well-wooded country, but sometimes hunts in open areas; most records are of birds at breeding sites in stands of mature eucalypts, these being much favoured for this purpose wherever they are available. Breeds during early summer.
